If an iPhone microphone is not working, the symptom matters because the phone contains multiple microphones used for calls, video, noise reduction and voice recording. Clear audio in one test and failure in another can narrow the fault to a particular area rather than “the microphone” as a whole.
Run three simple tests
- Record a short clip in Voice Memos and play it back.
- Record video with the rear camera, then with the front camera.
- Make a normal call and a speakerphone call to a trusted person.
Note whether the sound is silent, muffled, intermittent, distorted or unusually quiet. Test without a case and disconnect Bluetooth devices so the phone does not use another microphone.
Check permissions and openings
If one app is affected, review its microphone permission in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Inspect external openings for dirt, but do not push pins or liquid cleaners through the mesh. Aggressive cleaning can damage protective membranes and the microphone behind them.
Common hardware causes
- Compacted debris or contamination around an acoustic opening.
- Damage to the lower charging-port assembly after impact or moisture.
- A damaged front or rear flex assembly.
- Liquid corrosion at a connector or on the logic board.
- Previous repair damage or incorrectly positioned seals and brackets.
Why diagnosis comes before a part
A microphone complaint can be caused by an attached assembly, but audio circuits on the board can also fail. We reproduce the fault across controlled tests, inspect the relevant openings and connections, then use a known-good part where appropriate. That avoids replacing the charging port when the problem lies elsewhere.
Will repair erase your data?
Microphone hardware work does not normally erase the phone. Back up first where possible, particularly if the device also has liquid damage or restart problems.
