iPhone Face ID Not Working: Causes and Repair Limits

If iPhone Face ID is not working, first check whether the message concerns setup, temporary unavailability or a detected TrueDepth camera problem. The system uses several precisely aligned components, and some are paired to the original phone. Treating it like an ordinary front-camera replacement can permanently remove functionality.

Safe checks before repair

  • Clean the top front area of the display and remove any obstructing case or protector.
  • Restart the iPhone and install a pending iOS update if the phone is otherwise stable.
  • Check Settings → Face ID & Passcode to see which functions are enabled.
  • Try resetting Face ID only if you know the passcode and the phone does not contain unbacked-up critical data.
  • Note whether the fault began after a drop, screen repair or liquid exposure.

Why drops and liquid matter

The TrueDepth system includes the infrared camera, dot projector, flood illuminator and related flex assemblies. Impact can disturb alignment or damage a cable. Liquid can corrode tiny contacts and components without leaving obvious marks outside.

Face ID after a screen repair

A screen replacement should not require replacing the original Face ID hardware, but those parts must be transferred and protected correctly. If Face ID stopped immediately after another repair, preserve the original components and avoid repeated swapping before diagnosis.

What can be repaired?

The answer depends on the failed part and model. Some faults are connection or flex problems; others require component-level work on an original paired assembly. Physical damage to certain protected components can make restoration impractical. We test the system and explain the limitation before recommending work.

Will diagnosis erase the phone?

Hardware diagnosis does not normally require erasing data. Back up whenever possible and tell us if access to the files is more important than restoring Face ID. The passcode continues to unlock the phone even when Face ID is unavailable.
